Announcing the Breaking Barriers Bursary from the WCEC

We’re delighted to share some exciting news from our HR Director and proud member of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC), Leigh Breach, that the WCEC has established the Breaking Barriers Bursary.

For more than four decades, the WCEC has been the driving force behind raising standards within the cleaning industry, as well as supporting professional development and creating opportunities for everyone connected to the sector. The Breaking Barriers Bursary is a wonderful new initiative designed to help young people from cleaning industry families take the next step into Higher Education.

What is the Breaking Barriers Bursary?

This bursary provides financial support to selected young people who have a parent or legal guardian working within the British cleaning industry and are entering Higher Education in Autumn 2026.

Successful applicants will receive £5,000 per year paid across each academic term for students studying any degree subject at all universities throughout the country. This is open to all applicants between the ages of 18 to 25 with the goal to relieve some of the pressure and stress of the financial burden that comes with higher education.

The key criteria that applications will be assessed around will be the financial need and position of the student, the worthiness of the applicant, endeavour, and overall performance. The best candidates will be selected and will receive the bursary.

Leigh Breach expressed the importance of bursaries like this one:

“This is a fantastic way of supporting the families within our incredible industry. We want this to be shared with as many people within the wider cleaning sector as possible, as the wider the reach, the greater impact it will be able to make.

University is a time for young people to not only devote themselves to furthering their education, but also a chance to learn more about themselves in a brand new environment. This bursary helps to alleviate some of the strain that’s put on students financially so they can focus more on their studies and enjoy the full university experience.”

Kevin Meighan, Master of the WCEC says,

“We want to support young people from within our industry to go as far as their ambition takes them. It offers real financial support to students who might not otherwise be able to take up a university place. It’s the right thing to do and it’s just the beginning. Dedicated, talented young people just need the opportunity to develop their potential.”

How can you apply to the Breaking Barriers Bursary?

You can find applications for the bursary through the WCEC website, where you’ll be asked to also include a personal statement with your submission. The deadline for applications is 1st August 2026, and if you have a child or know someone who might be eligible, we can’t stress enough what a phenomenal opportunity this bursary is.

We’re so excited by this new scheme for young people connected to our industry, and at NECS, we want to extend our best wishes to all potential applicants and university prospects for this year’s uptake.
