10 questions for Gary Breach, Managing Director of NECS
NECS Managing Director, Gary Breach, was recently featured in 10 questions by BusinessLive North East! In this article, Gary tells BusinessLive about his first job, why he loves to do business in the North East, and how the cleaning sector and NECS has evolved over the years.
What was your first job (and how much did it pay)?
I grew up on a farm in the 80’s/90’s and my first job was helping out on a neighbouring farm in the summer holidays when I was 15 years old – I think I was on £2 per hour, and it was hard work but great fun! I also worked at the local Co-op stacking shelves.
What is the best advice or support you’ve been given in business?
Learn to delegate – this has proved to be sound advice as it is only through delegation of tasks that as a business owner you will have the time and focus to work ‘on the business’ rather than in it.
What are the main changes you’ve seen in your business/sector, and what are the challenges you’re facing?
Post pandemic demand for cleaning services seems to be on the increase whilst labour availability is decreasing. Whilst this is a challenge, we are tackling this by offering our employees increased hours across single or multiple sites which both fills vacancies with experienced staff, but also turns what has traditionally been part time work into a career.
What would your dream job be?
Growing up I wanted to be a pilot in the RAF or a professional rugby player. However, I can safely say that ship has sailed on both fronts.
What advice would you give to someone starting out a career in your sector?
To be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up, would be my advice for anyone starting out. Also be conscientious, focused and do things the right way and your talent will be recognised.
What makes the Northeast a good place to do business?
In a word, the people – we are known for being friendly but there is also a strong work ethic and proudness which is ingrained in the Northeast and is exceptional. We have certainly seen this at NECS, in the level of commitment our employees have to their job and the business.
How important is it for business to play a role in society?
It has always been important, but nowadays with there being less support for charities and a greater demand from local communities, I feel there is more of a responsibility on businesses to ensure they are contributing where they can.
Outside of work, what are you really good at?
I work very hard so my focus outside of work is spending quality time with my family. I’m extremely lucky to be able to travel the world, have amazing experiences and make lots of memories with them. I think it’s important for business owners to have that balance!
Who would play you in a film about your life?
Probably Robert de Niro.
Which three people would you invite to a dinner party?
As a family man I would be very happy to have a dinner party with my wife and son, spending quality time together and enjoying good food. As I need to invite a 3rd person, it would have to be De Niro – I think he would be great company and I would be able to give him some pointers for the film!
